This thing came way out of left field. Here's an artist who played an integral role in founding future funk, a web-genre that is defined in large part by its heavy use of samples. And here's his first fully realized long player - an album that he recorded with a jazz pianist. Instead of sampling obscure 80's funk cuts they just went ahead and wrote an album chock full of some of the most seriously funky gems you're likely to hear in 2015. We're even hesitant to call this future funk. Sure it's got all the necessary elements - massive DX7 bass lines, huge 909 kick and clap, that feeling of always either strutting or kind of gripping your shirt at the chest with one hand and reaching to the sky with the other like in an R. Kelly video. But I think a more accurate descriptor would be jazz fusion. I know you want to cringe at the mention of fusion, but this isn't some guitar dad jerk off. "ONE" leaps around from future funk smashers, lounged out jazz, straight funk house and everything in between without once losing its cool. The fusion of PERSONA LA AVE (Dylan Dawkins - producer) and BARAKA (Geoffrey Dean - player) has given birth to an incredible creative powerhouse, and as the title implies, "ONE" is only the beginning.
